Emotions
Back-to-School time marks the end of summer vacation and the beginning of a new chapter for students. It's a time filled with exciting new opportunities and, sometimes, a little trepidation.
- Fresh Beginnings: Going back to school provides a chance for students to start fresh. They can set new goals, embrace new challenges, and build upon their previous accomplishments. The new academic year brings with it the potential for personal growth, academic achievements, and the exploration of new interests.
- Emotional Adjustments: Starting a new school year can bring a mix of emotions. Some students may feel a little apprehensive about meeting new classmates and teachers, but it's important to remember that these emotions are natural and temporary. As children adjust to their new environment, they often find joy and fulfillment in the opportunities that await them.
- Parental Involvement: Parents play a vital role in supporting their children during this time. By maintaining open lines of communication, offering encouragement, and getting involved in school activities, parents can help alleviate any apprehensions and instill a positive mindset in their children as they embark on their academic journey.
- Sleep: As we enter a new school year, now is the time to start setting wellness goals that will help prioritize mental health for your family. Making sleep a priority, maintaining a routine, limiting screen time (especially at night), and getting involved with school activities are crucial.

Mental Health
SPS Back to School Wellness Tips
SPS Families:
In just a few weeks, Stillwater Public Schools will be back in session. This can be a time full of mixed emotions (for both children and adults!). Some students may be excited, whereas others may be feeling anxious.
It is our goal to support families in their overall wellness, so we’ve got some general tips for back to school time. We have reached out to our SPS counselors as well as local mental health professionals. We will be sharing their advice over the next few weeks that will hopefully make the transition a little easier.
As you know, both physical and emotional wellness are critical to student learning and engagement; consider these suggestions for a healthy year:
-
Sleep: Get a good night’s sleep. Adults need 7-8 hours in order to maintain good health, but children need more sleep than that: (Preschoolers: 10-13 hours, School-aged children: 9-12 hours, Teens: 8-10 hours).
-
Set Routines: Being consistent with bedtime, mealtime, playtime, homework time, screen time and activity time creates a sense of stability and predictability.
-
Listen: Encourage your child to share their day with you and take the time to listen.
-
Manage Stress: Help your child develop healthy ways to channel stress. Go for a walk as a family, draw with them, eat dinner together, or play outside. You might also practice breathing or relaxation techniques together.
-
Get Involved: Participating in school clubs and activities can be beneficial to students’ overall health. SPS offers a multitude of different ways to get involved! Examples are school clubs and organizations, sports, involvement in fine arts, or volunteer groups. Helpful tip: limit your child to 1-2 activities to prevent them from becoming overwhelmed!
-
Seek Help if Needed: Although children are resilient, it's important to pay attention to signs of anxiety, depression, or changes in behavior. If you need additional support for your child, please directly contact support staff at your child’s school including the school counselor or principal. For a comprehensive list of SPS and community resources, click here.
-
School Health: If your child has a chronic health condition or requires medication to be taken at school, it is important to reach out to either the elementary school nurse (Amy Spiva, RN, BSN) or the secondary school nurse (David Coates, RN, BSN); here is a link to the SPS Health Services page. Find additional information on requesting shot records and resources for back to school immunizations here, as well as the immunizations required to attend SPS here.

Safety and Health
School Resource Officers
Stillwater Public Schools partners with the Stillwater Police Department to staff our schools with four school resource officers. This valuable part of our team serves to provide additional safety and supervision, teach our students about the importance of law enforcement, and to communicate about and respond to potential threats to student, staff, parent, and visitor safety.
Standard Respons Protocols
A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the classroom response to an incident at school. Weather events, fire, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by students, teachers, staff and administration. Stillwater Public Schools uses Standard Response Protocol (SRP) to respond to security incidents and SchoolMessenger to notify parents/guardians about those incidents.

Mental Health & Counseling
Stillwater Public Schools is committed to providing our students with excellent counseling services to address their mental health & school guidance needs. Supplementing our team of counselors, embedded DHS staff and GRAND Mental Health professionals help make sure our students are receiving the help they need and working to make our schools happier, healthier and safer.
Trauma-Responsive ApproachOklahoma students have a high number of adverse childhood experiences, and we’re addressing that in our community. Recent work includes the addition of counselors across the district, including substance abuse counseling, professional development training from Dr. Barbara Sorrels, Executive Director of The Institute for Childhood Education, and enhancements to our Family Support Services. Our community is strongly engaged in these efforts through partnerships with local organizations, including a food pantry at our alternative academy, and generous donations to charitable drives supporting our students. In addition to counselors at all sites, SPS also employs a Wellness and Trauma Response Coordinator, a Substance Abuse Counselor, and two High Needs Counselors. 1 to 1 Device Initiative (Grades 1-12)
The Stillwater PACT initiative is an extension of our mission to champion academic and personal growth for every student as we prepare students for life and work in a technology-rich world. This initiative ensures a one device per one student ratio at all levels within Stillwater Public Schools.
Issuing devices to students will not change the fundamentals of how students learn and engage at school, but it will enhance their learning environments in ways not possible otherwise. SPS is known for students that perform exceptionally well academically, and we recognize that allowing students to explore their interests gets them excited about learning.
A technology fee will provide 100% insurance coverage of the first incidence of damage, and 50% of the second incidence. After two incidents, the parent/guardian/student is responsible for all repairs and replacement costs. Acts of intentional damage or a lost chromebook/charger will not be covered by the technology fee.
-
Grades 1-5
- Each student will be provided a device in their homeroom classrooms that they will use throughout the school day.
- Technology fee is included in the $50 elementary supply fee collected at the time of enrollment verification.
-
Grades 6-12
- Students in grades 6 -12 will receive a device at schedule pickup and be responsible for the device throughout the school year.

Dress Code

Students need to dress appropriately for various school activities such as recess, physical education classes, and field trips. Student appearance and dress should not detract from the learning environment. While the mission of Stillwater Public Schools is to educate its students, it is important that dress contributes to the atmosphere of a positive educational environment. It is hoped that a minimum amount of time and effort is spent on enforcement; however, it is the responsibility of the student and parents to adhere to these guidelines. The building administration will use their best judgement when addressing clothing, hairstyles, and/or accessories not specifically addressed herein, which may negatively impact safety and learning.
All final decisions about school attire/appearance will be made by the principal.
