Student Support and Wellness

  • S Mental Health Logo

Stillwater Public Schools is committed to providing our students with excellent student support services to address their needs. Both physical and emotional wellness are critical to student learning and engagement, and our schools play a central role in fostering and supporting the well-being of children and young adults. Mentally healthy students are more likely to come to school ready to learn, actively engage in school activities, have supportive and caring connections with adults and young people, and use appropriate problem-solving skills. We strive to increase equitable access to resources that promote the academic, social, and mental wellness of all students.

Our team includes caring and qualified School Counselors, Licensed Professional Counselors, School Nurses, Resource Specialists, a Substance Abuse Counselor, and a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) & Prevention Grant Specialist.  Supplementing our team, a School-Based Social-Services Specialist and embedded mental health professionals help make sure our students are receiving the help they need and working to make our schools happier, healthier and safer.

We hope the information and resources included on this page help support families in their overall wellness. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

MENTAL HEALTH & SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION
In partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS) and the Oklahoma State University Center for Family Resilience, Stillwater Public Schools is excited to announce that it has received a large grant to implement evidence-based, school-based prevention services. The target areas include substance use and abuse, school climate, and psychological distress. School-based prevention services include planning, coordination and delivery of evidence-informed strategies to students, families, staff and educators. SPS is looking forward to providing these services to our students and the community, and seeing the positive impact that prevention services will have within the district.

    TRAUMA-RESPONSIVE APPROACH
Oklahoma students have a high number of adverse childhood experiences, and we’re addressing that in our community. We do this through professional development training from Dr. Barbara Sorrels, Executive Director of The Institute for Childhood Education, comprehensive mental health prevention and response training for all staff, suicide prevention training, using the Handle with Care model, and implementing the MTSS framework districtwide.
